LED Home Theaters Now Brighter from Digital Projection

LED projectors are more energy efficient, don’t require replacement lamps and create stunning images, but they have a reputation for not being very bright. Digital Projection International (DPI)is changing that last perception by upgrading the brightness on all it’s LED home cinema projectors.

By combining engineering and newly available components, each of DPI’s LED displays now delivers higher luminance, with select models (priced between $12,995 and $39,995 MSRP) breaking the 1,000 lumen threshold.

The improved brightness levels can be found in both the M-Vision Series and dVision Series, along with the new dVision 35 series LED models also offering 3D capability. Alongside the higher brightness, DPI’s LED displays deliver Lifetime Illumination, providing a virtually maintenance-free imaging solution that never requires a lamp replacement and consumes a fraction of the power of typical UHP lamp-sourced projectors, according to the company.

Though currently less bright than their lamp-based counterparts, LED displays are perceived as being much brighter than their measured luminance specifications, thanks in part to the Helmholtz-Kohlrausch effect (H-K effect). The International Electrotechnical Commission defines the Helmholtz-Kohlrausch effect as, “A change in brightness of perceived color produced by increasing the purity of a color stimulus while keeping its luminance constant within the range of photopic vision.”

The H-K effect describes a situation whereby if two color stimuli sources with the same luminance are compared, the perceived brightness induced by the color stimuli of higher purity will be higher than that of lower purity. LED illuminated projectors produce extraordinarily high color purity and saturation, thus appearing brighter than a lamp-based display with similar measured lumen specifications.

In each of Digital Projection’s LED displays, the RGB-based LED illumination system eliminates the need for a color wheel to produce primary colors. Instead, red, green and blue LED’s produce primary color illumination, rendering a color gamut and color saturation similar to that of a 3-chip DLP projector with no color wheel artifacts. Additionally, certain LED displays in DPI’s product line feature FastFrame technology, which assures fast-moving content appears sharp and free of motion smear. DPI’s LED displays utilize Texas Instruments’ DarkChip DLP technology.
