For true home theater fans, a flat panel TV simply won’t do. You need a home theater projector. More than that, you need one that’s bright enough to fill up your big screen, won’t require a lot of service or setup and lasts for years and years without needing a new lamp.
Some of you might be thinking that description sounds like quite a reach, but new lamp technology coming to market in several home theater projectors is making those wishes come true.
In the January 2015 issue of Electronic House, we look at advances in LED and laser-based projectors. There are many advantages to using these new light technologies over the old lamps in digital projectors. One of the biggest advantages is their lifespan. Have you ever imagined getting 20,000 hours of use from a single projector lamp? That’s possible with some of these new systems.
Laser and LED projectors are found in a verily of projector styles and technologies, including LCoS, DLP and LCD. New projectors from Sony, Epson, Digital Projection, SIM2 and more are offering products with these light sources.
The new laser and LED projectors are expensive, at least compared with some of the most popular home theater projectors now on the market, but they’re getting more affordable all the time. The projectors profiled in this Electronic House article range from about $8,000 to $149,000, so they’re targeted at the elite market of custom-built home theaters.

For years and years my family has had a large flat screen TV in our theater room, and recently my kids have been telling me that we need to get a projector of some sorts. I am open to getting a projector, but like you mention, I do not want one that requires a lot of service or setup. I have never heard of laser-based projectors, but it sounds like they are a good option. I think I will look into those and see what my family thinks. Thanks for this information!
