Now, let’s not get totally crazy. There really is no such thing as a “wireless” speaker. Even the Zona needs power, which means that it needs to be near an outlet or one of your many extension cords. However, this type of setup provides users with the unique option of placing speakers away from the main setup and eliminates the need to run speaker wire. In other words, it’s pretty convenient.

Each Zona speaker has a built-in wireless receiver, as well as a two-way power amp. Choose where you want the speaker (where are those outlets anyway?), connect the Zona transmitter to your receiver, and you will be ready to rock that remote location. Inside each speaker, there is one 4.5-inch woofer and one 1-inch soft dome tweeter. Boasting 16 bit/48 kHz audio quality, other Zona highlights include a wireless range up to 150 feet, a rated frequency response of 55 Hz to 20 kHz, a remote, and threaded inserts for wall or stand mounting. Also, because the Zona has a USB port, you can hook up an external device and blast music right from your laptop, iPod, or other compatible device.

What the Manufacturer Says

Running wires to your surround speakers can be tough from both sides – either the wires themselves are hard to run or the speaker placement can be difficult. Aperion Audio’s new Zona Wireless Surround Speaker System brings reliable audiophile-grade surround sound to your home theater in a pair of high-quality wireless bookshelf speakers. The built-in wireless receivers and two-way power amplifiers in each speaker make Zona a simply beautiful and easy to install addition to most home theater systems.

Home Theater Review
“The Aperion Zona system is an audio version of a Swiss-Army knife. Its flexibility is limited by the user’s imagination, and proximity to a power outlet. I found myself moving the speakers to various locations of my home including the garage, and backyard (Zona are not outdoor speakers by design) and found that they operated flawlessly through several walls and over wide distances. Couple these speakers with an on-line radio service such as Pandora and an iPod and you have very little need for any other audio gear.”

“Sound quality is very good. Levels adjustability is adequate, and the range is impressive with the two bookshelf style sized speakers. Aperion knows good speakers, and they don’t really disappoint here for most causal uses. This is easily the most powerful and best set of wireless speakers I have ever used.”

“Surround sound is a subjective experience. Zona’s surround is not particularly evident, but that implies no criticism to the overall excellence of spatial audio output. Being front-firing drivers, the sensation is more room-filling than true surround… Five hundred dollars is a lot of money, and in this case the price is justified by Aperion’s mastery of technology and engineering.”

What Electronic House Says

Some things seem to be too good to be true. In the case of Aperion’s Zona wireless speaker, it’s true and pretty terrific. Just a few years back, wireless speakers would be something that most people would scoff at — like a novelty to be sold in the back of comic books. Well, comic book ads aren’t what they used to be, and neither is wireless technology. While there are plenty of speakers worthy of $500, there’s certainly something to be said for not having to tear into Sheetrock and fishing wire. Aperion is a hearty contender for your audio dollars on any day, so we are excited to see them getting into the wireless arena and actually making it work.
