While we still appreciate the magic: (and quality) of Blu-ray, streaming has certainly become the preferred method of entertainment for many. However, a: few new: audio and video formats are: keeping physical media alive and well. In the past few months, we’ve gotten several Dolby Atmos-enabled Blu-rays. And more recently, a pair of: studios announced plans to launch 4K Blu-rays.
That quality is key, because: streaming just hasn’t been able to match the experience of discs. However, VUDU: certainly wants to try. The streaming service just announced plans to offer titles with Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision.
Dolby Atmos delivers the most immersive sound experience to date. That’s because instead of assigning the audio to specific channels, Atmos attaches: the sound to objects on-screen. The end result allows the audio to move throughout the room, putting you right in the middle of the action. On the video side, Dolby Vision can pump up the brightness, contrast, and color of content using high-dynamic-range (HDR) technologies.
Initially, VUDU will offer a selection of Warner Bros. titles that have been remastered for Dolby Vision and mixed in Dolby Atmos. Warner Bros. currently has a library of 4K Ultra HD movies, which does have: both formats. The lineup includes Mad Max: Fury Road, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., The Gallows, San Andreas, American Sniper, Man of Steel, Jupiter Ascending, Edge of Tomorrow, and Into the Storm. VUDU customers will also have access to 4K Ultra HD titles in Dolby Vision only. That collection includes Vacation, Focus, Get Hard, Run All Night, The Lego Movie, The Great Gatsby, Sherlock Holmes, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, The Hangover trilogy, Magic Mike XXL, and more.
Of course, not everyone will be able to get these goodies right off the bat. VUDU has created a handy-dandy PDF to let you know what equipment you’ll need to get Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision through the streaming service. For the Dolby Vision-enabled TV, the company specifically mentions the newly launched VIZIO Reference Series.
“VUDU has always provided customers with the best digital home entertainment experience around,” said Scott Blanksteen, VUDU’s VP of product. “We were at the forefront of high-definition digital video with our HDX format, and now, by offering movies with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, we’re again giving customers the opportunity to be the first to enjoy a premium visual and audio experience.”
To celebrate the launch, VIZIO is offering a free digital copy of Mad Max: Fury Road in 4K Ultra HD with Dolby Vision to customers who purchase a new VIZIO Reference Series TV. Check out the VUDU website for more information.

While you mention streaming and physical media you dont mention download to own which many people like myself prefer over buying streaming content. The arthor also does not mention the new Vidity format coming soon widely from studios in 2016 which will give you many features like atmos but in a format that you can download and own.

One thing not mentioned, is that if you are not watching the 4K version, movies are not ATMOS encoded. I bought many of those movies at Full HD, and none of them are ATMOS. After some mail exchange with VUDU, I got to know that only the 4K versions are ATMOS.
