DIYer Shows How to Make an TV Lift Cabinet

This step-by-step tutorial can add an AV lift cabinet into your home for under $1,000.

No matter how slick and slender manufacturers make today’s HDTVs, some people can’t stand the look of that component when it’s not in use. That’s not a problem, if you’ve got a cabinet with a TV lift. These cool little furniture creations can hide almost any HDTV at the touch of a button.

Of course, those options can get expensive, especially if you want a functional piece of furniture and own a larger HDTV. If you’re handy, however, you don’t need thousands of dollars to stash that HDTV. Apparently, it’s very possible and pretty easy to make your own TV lift cabinet.

Over at Instructables (via Lifehacker), a user named ihart has posted tutorial. It has an equipment list and a step-by-step instructions, complete with photos. The project’s main components include birch plywood and a lift by Firgelli Automation, which he used to stash his 60-inch Samsung flat screen.

Overall, the project cost ihart under $1,000. That doesn’t include the price of the TV or your precious time. That said, a similar cabinet can cost double or triple that, so it’s not too shabby. Bragging rights, of course, are priceless.
