The new option allows subscribers to watch recordings on devices in the house or on the go.

A peek at Comcast's X1 platform.

Comcast has officially launched its X1 Cloud DVR. However, don’t get too excited; to start, the service will only be available in select markets.

The latest area to get the goods is the company’s “Freedom Region,” which includes greater Philadelphia, New Jersey and northern Delaware.

The hook on the Xfinity X1 DVR is that it has cloud technology, as well as live in-home streaming. That basically means that while you’re in the home, you’ll be able to watch DVR recordings and live TV streaming on any mobile device or computer connected to the network. Customers can also “check-out” DVR recordings, by downloading them to a mobile device for on-the-go use.

“We want to provide customers with the best television experience on every device, when they want it and where they want it,” said LeAnn Talbot, Comcast’s regional senior VP. “The cloud-based infrastructure of the X1 platform allows us to deliver on that promise, and give customers a more personalized viewing experience.”

To use these new features, users will need to download the latest Xfinity TV app for iOS and Android devices. There’s also a dedicated portal for viewing content on connected computers. Once logged in, customers can browse their full Comcast lineup, as well as DVR recordings.

Comcast plans to offer the DVR and these features to additional markets throughout the year.
