Bang & Olufsen Goes to 7.1 with Beovision 12 TV

The 65-inch plasma includes a surround sound module and a motorized floor stand.

Despite some seriously gorgeous images, a lot of today’s HDTVs sound horrible. For some reason, most manufacturers can’t seem to squeeze a good sound system into that slim bezel. Bang & Olufsen is doing its best to rock out the Beovision 12-65 New Generation plasma, by adding a 7.1 surround sound module.

So technically, it’s not a full 7.1 sound system, but it’s designed to sound like one. That’s delivered through is a dedicated center-channel speaker below the screen, along with a 7.1 “surround sound module.” That same sound system has several sound modes — or you can create your own.

If you have speakers in your system, the TV can even adapt, thanks to something called TrueImage technology. This perk can up and downmix audio to match the number of speakers in your system.

Of course, it’s still designed to look pretty. Other features include the BeoSystem 4 video engine, a full 1080p image, active 3D features (glasses are sold separately), a 360-degree stand, and a topaz speaker grille.

There’s no word on the plasma’s price. However, the last version of the TV ran a cool $11K. Surprised? You obviously don’t know Bang & Olufsen! The rest should expect the Beovision 12-65 New Generation plasma to start shipping sometime in September.
