The DIY home security market continues to grow, and the latest entry is LG. What makes it even more interesting is that LG is not going it alone. The company’s first home security system is part of a partnership with professional home security company, ADT. Oh, and the product is a home security camera.
LG is being tight-lipped about the product details (why?), but it’s clearly a Wi-Fi home monitoring camera with other features built in. According to the brief press release, LG says the product (which doesn’t have a name yet) will work with the Nest thermostat and can also function as the hub for other connected devices. That makes it sound kind of like the Piper, which can also act as a Z-Wave hub.
The fact that LG specifically identified Nest as a key product, might suggest that the new device includes Thread, but LG isn’t a Thread member company. LG is a member of the Z-Wave alliance, and including Z-Wave in it, similar to the Piper, could be how this new product will act as a central smart home hub.
8 Must-Have Devices for a DIY Home Security System
There are a lot of other wireless security cameras on the market, but LG’s integration with ADT’s Pulse system may give it a little edge. One of the problems with DIY systems is that once you get the notification of activity, you’re on your own to do something about it. Do you drive home quickly (if you’re close enough)? Do you call the police (who don’t like to respond to DIY security system alerts)? Or do you call your neighbor, possibly putting that person at risk? By partnering with a professional 24/7 monitoring service, this LG device may offer a bit more security than other off-the-shelf products. Of course we don’t know the details yet.
Another question is what peripheral products will it work with? Will it be Z-Wave, Zigbee, Bluetooth mesh, Thread, Homekit… or all of the above? Will the system have an app based on the ADT Pulse app or something completely unique. We’ll find out all of this in the Fall of 2015 when the product gets released. Until then, just lock your doors.
