Smart outlets are pretty cool for turning things on and off from remote locations. Having everyday devices plugged into one of these smart outlets can easily put automation into rooms that previously didn’t have such high-tech conveniences. Just plug a smart outlet into your regular existing outlet, pair the outlet with your smartphone, and start plugging in electronic devices. That’s pretty much it. Once everything is connected, you should be able to turn on lights, fans, TVs, and plenty of other electronic devices, all without having to move from your favorite chair.
That’s pretty cool. However, two new Brio Smart Outlets are even cooler—because these devices are a whole lot smarter.
Both of these smart outlets pack in patented micro-controller technology. This allows the Brio Safe Outlet to not only know when something is plugged into the outlet, but it actually knows the difference between a plug and a person. That way, you won’t have to worry about little fingers getting a jolt. It doesn’t have any type of smartphone component, but it does have plenty of smarts. Other features include a sharp cobalt-blue LED light for when the outlet is in override mode and a sleek design, with the option of a removable faceplate coming soon.
The Brio Smart Outlet is a separate product that works in conjunction with a whole network of wireless sensors, so that when danger is afoot—whether it’s smoke, water or carbon monoxide—the smart outlet will actually notify you through the Brio mobile app. If your phone is off, Brio will make the potential disaster known, by sounding off an audible alarm.
Pretty smart, eh?
Brio should start shipping both smart outlets sometime in May 2015. The Brio Safe Outlet is priced at $49. The Brio Smart Outlet is $99, but also includes enough starter sensors for carbon monoxide, water and smoke detection.
