Big Ass Fans Smartens Up Ceiling Fans Using SenseME

The Haiku with SenseME ceiling fan is scheduled to ship later this summer.

There are plenty of web-enabled thermostats and even web-enabled air conditioning units. Now, Big A$s Fans is putting web features into one of its — well, big @ss fans. More specifically, it’s a ceiling fan, which has an on-board computer and a bunch of sensors, known as SenseME.

Available exclusively on the company’s Haiku ceiling fans, SenseME technology is what makes it so the fan “knows” when you enter the room or leave it. From there, it will turn on or off automatically. The sensors also keep tabs on the room’s temperature and humidity and can adjust speeds.

Even more impressive is the fan’s “learning” features, which means that the fan can actually remember your comfort preferences and make adjustments accordingly.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a web-enabled fan without a smartphone app. This allows users to set schedules for the fan and the light or select from several control modes. For instance, “Gradual Awake” is a mode that can increase the fan’s speed and light gradually, for a nice little wake-up call.

“The typical home has more than three fans, but they’re no smarter or better looking than your great-grandma’s,” said Carey Smith, the company’s founder. “In the past couple of years, we’ve seen smart thermostats and smart light bulbs, yet you still have to pull a chain to start your ceiling fan. SenseME changes everything.”

The Haiku with SenseME is scheduled to ship sometime in July. The company is currently taking pre-orders for the product, with prices based on the size of the fan, the finish, and more.
