Sonos users, rejoice! The company has added yet another way to stream music to those wireless speakers. And apparently, it’s one you’ve all been asking for.
Sonos Spotify Radio is now streaming, thanks to a new 5.4 version of the company’s software. This means you can start a radio station based on any artist or track. Once you make a selection, Spotify will play all sorts of random music based on that selection to whatever Sonos speakers you have in the house.
Yes, this option is a lot like Pandora, but it’s been a part of the Spotify service for a while now. However, to get Spotify Radio on Sonos speakers, you do need to be a Spotify subscriber. So if you don’t pay the $9.99 monthly fee, you’re out of luck. Otherwise, you will be able to stream Sonos Spotify Radio on Sonos speakers throughout the entire house, so you’ll never miss a beat while you’re walking from the bedroom to the basement and beyond.
According to Sonos, the company has been working closely with Spotify to make this happen—and make it seamless, especially during peak usage times.
“The update also includes performance improvements for the long-term,” said Andrew Schulert, VP of quality at Sonos. “After our customers listening to Spotify on Sonos experienced some issues during the holidays, I gave a summary of some short-term changes we made. Since then, our teams have worked together to redesign the system for integrating Sonos with Spotify to be much more stable, even as the number of listeners at peak times increases in the future.”
This latest news comes hot on the heels of May’s announcement that Sonos would be adding better streaming options and better sound overall.
Currently, Sonos 5.4 is in public beta, but for Android users only. If you’re interested in checking out the beta to try out Sonos Spotify Radio on your Sonos speakers, go sign up on the Sonos website. An iOS and desktop version of the update is expected to follow soon.

Pandora would seem to be the better option since there is no required monthly fee and it works great on Sonos speakers.

They do offer Pandora as well. Hey, it’s nice to have options!

Looks like Sonos is trying to catch up to the HEOS system from Denon which has the much better version of Spotify called Spotify Connect. I used to have a Sonos Play 3 but switched to HEOS and now have 4 rooms of HEOS 5 – the HEOS system is much easier to use and sounds a lot better.
