Polk is ready to rock your desktop — and look darn good while doing it. Polk speakers just started shipping the Hampden, a brand-new bookshelf speaker designed for your computer.
However, the Hampden works with plenty of other devices as well. That’s because it packs Bluetooth inside these all-wood cabinets. Having Bluetooth wireless technology means that these Polk speakers don’t need to be tethered to one device. Users can stream music wirelessly to the speakers from any Bluetooth-enabled computer, smartphone, tablet and more.
Sold in pairs, the Hampden computer speakers includes two 1-inch soft-dome silk/polymer tweeters and two 4.5-inch polypropylene woofers with rubber surrounds. Those speaker drivers are angled upwards, in order to create a more immersive listening experience. Also worth noting is that each driver and tweeter has a dedicated digital amplifier, as well as a fully digital pre amp to handle all of the digital signal processing when the speakers are connected via USB.
If you don’t want to limit the Hampden speakers to your home office, Polk says that these speakers can also be used as part of a larger home theater system.
The Hampden can connect to a variety of devices via Bluetooth, but also works with Polk’s DJ Stream app. Designed for iOS and Android devices, the app can provide speaker access to as many as four people. That way, everyone can play DJ! Well, almost. However, in addition to one DJ Host and the three Active DJs, the system can also support up to 128 additional Guest DJs who can view the playlist, vote on music, and slip into an Active DJ spot when someone drops out.
“With Hampden, we wanted to create a home audio solution that brings great sound and increased functionality to the desktop, while reflecting the retro design aesthetic seen in our recently launched Heritage Collection of personal audio accessories,” said Michael DiTullo, chief design officer of Sound United. “Hampden captures the essence of a classic pair of Polk speakers, featuring a timeless yet minimalist design that fits well in the home office or living room. By adding USB connectivity, Bluetooth wireless technology and compatibility with our DJ Stream App, users now have more listening options and access to an interactive element that creates a more social and sharable music playing experience.”
Polk has just started shipping the Hampden. It’s available now, with MSRP of $399.95 per pair.
