2014 Acura RLX to Rock with Krell Audio System

Krell follows in footsteps of audio companies like Meridian, B&W and Mark Levinson in teaming up with luxury automobile manufacturers.


Meridian and Jaguar, Mark Levinson and Lexus, Bowers & Wilkins and Maserati to name a few … now Krell Industries has joined the ranks of high-performance audio companies offering their systems in luxury automobiles, announcing that the 2014 Acura RLX will include a system from Krell.

The car, which recently debuted at the L.A. Auto Show, is getting quite a bit of buzz.

To ensure the system had the power and range to meet the demanding needs of the automotive environment, Acura turned to Krell Industries’ philosophy of musical detail, three-dimensional sound presentation and extreme volume capability, according to a press release from the company.

“We’ve been in business for more than 30 years. We’re well known for making the highest-performance audio products for the home and we are excited to bring our sound quality to the automotive environment,” says Krell Industries president Bill McKiegan. “Every aspect of the system’s design was dissected and optimized to achieve a system that is sonically breathtaking.”

The system’s main amplifier channels feature the same high-quality bipolar power transistors used in flagship Krell home amplifiers. The result is an amplifier that has one-third-less distortion than a leading competitor’s flagship luxury car amplifier.

The system’s tweeters are composed of lightweight magnesium cones and the speakers employ metal grilles that are inherently stronger than the plastics used for most car audio systems. With this strength, the grille can have more open area without compromising its integrity or sound performance. Metal grilles also vibrate less than typical plastic grilles.

The system has six mid bass drivers that are made from Zylon – a strong “super fiber” that is very rigid material and therefore well suited for speaker manufacturing. Zylon responds quickly to a musical input but more importantly than that it stops moving when the musical signal stops. Polypropylene cones, which are used in the vast majority of car audio speakers, continue moving well after the music stops, according to Krell. With less unwanted vibration, the sound quality is cleaner and more detailed with Zylon based speakers.

Rounding out the speaker complement is a carbon fiber composite subwoofer. The dedicated 100-watt subwoofer amplifier ensures that low frequency music is reproduced cleanly and with impact.
