You’ve upgraded to the 4th generation Apple TV settop box. It’s great, except that it’s missing an optical port to connect your surround-sound system or soundbar. Thanks to a new device introduced by Kanex, you can enjoy all that the new Apple TV has to offer … and hear it all in glorious surround sound. The Kanex Digital Audio Adapater ($59.95) provides an optical audio port, while the Kanex HDMI to VGA Adapter ($59.95) connects a VGA-ready TV, monitor, or projector with audio support.
With the compact Digital Audio Adapter users can stream HD content from the Apple TV directly to their existing home theater system via HDMI. The device supports 7.1 and 5.1 surround sound via standard optical audio, or 2.0 surround sound via 3.5mm audio port.
The Kanex HDMI to VGA adapter is used mainly for business presentations and educational experiences where users want to stream content from the Apple TV to VGA projectors, monitors, and TVs.
“While new technology is generally designed to enhance entertainment to make life easier, it can also complicate things,” says Andrew Truong of Kanex. “Although the new Apple TV brought a host of new features and apps, it also took away its optical audio output, leaving many users with no easy surround-sound system solution. Our plug-and-play solutions for the new Apple TV allow users to keep their existing home theater hardware and enjoy the benefits of modern technology at the same time.”

I don’t see a market for this product at all. Please tell me what’s the point when you can use HDMI through the receiver to get the audio? Oh…unless you have a completely antiquated receiver…which presents a perfect opportunity for an up-sale instead of this band-aid.
