I think the most important point of the article was to observe grayscale. A very high contrast ratio is wasted if the grayscale is not smooth. Cost vs. bandwidth and the market’s willingness to pay for it (equalibrium) is the situation.  I say bring on the bandwidth.  We’ll ultimately make use of it.
