The article ScottS points to notes that, during the week reported on, Sharp, Panasonic, and Sony gave away Blu-ray players with their TVs. Samsung did not, and sold almost no players during that week.

Because they are dedicated players, HD DVD players use about 1/10th the power of the least expensive Blu-ray player (the Playstation 3).

It seems there is a little misinformation in this article. It sounds like NPD isn’t happy with the leaked numbers and has put them in context in this article.

Oh, BTW, for the sake of disclosure, I’m in my 40s, married for 14 years, one kid, and plenty of cash that my wife doesn’t let me spend.
And neither will yours, so spend it while ya can.

Wow, talk about assumptions, eh? I must have stepped on some toes seeing some people are dragging their resumes out in some sort of p*ssing contest. Of course, I’ve been childishly called an “HD DUD fanboy” despite owning players for both formats, which sounds more like words from a 15 year old rather than an almost-30-year-old engineer. If you think it’s “status” to spend more money for a format that is still standardizing its specs, I don’t care. When you overpay, someone who builds the overpriced blu machine gets a living. So it’s not all that bad. For me, I…

Dclaring Blu-ray the winner at this early stage of the market is not unlike declaring the winner of the New Hampshire primary based on the first precinct that opened just after midnight on primary day where the results were released about 1 am. I think there were fewer than 50 voters in that little town. Wait until the polls close…
