Monolith Media Center: MythTV Minus Linux Headache
I've tried to use Linux at least 20 times, but each of my open source excursions has left me bloody, battered and feeling quite dumb.
Thankfully, smarter people are making Linux accessible to the rest of us. For example, the Linux-based MythTV system -- a free alternative to TiVo and Windows Media Center Edition -- is now bundled up nice and tidy in the $649.99 Monolith Media Center.
I realize that $649.99 is not the same as "free," so let me explain the discrepancy. The price tag comes from the equipment and the hassle-saving Monolith offers by pre-installing and configuring the Linux box. MythTV, the software, is free. This means you don't have to pay a monthly subscription fee for DVR capabilities or an electronic program guide.
The Monolith Media Center (a.k.a "MonolithMC") package comes with a remote control, an IR blaster and all the cables needed for installation. The unit can be upgraded (for additional cost) with a higher-capacity hard drive, an HDTV tuner and DVD-RW drives.
MonolithMC is available through Monolith's Web site. -- Mac Slocum
