Rolling Stone magazine is one of the most influential media outlets in music history, and one of its most popular special issues is now interactive.

Zinio, a digital publishing technology company, has introduced an interactive version of the “Rolling Stone: 500 Greatest Songs of All Time” application for the Apple iPad.

With the app, users will be able to sample music and purchase songs via Apple’s iTunes store with the swipe of a finger, and they’ll be able to learn facts about each one of the songs while viewing related photos and other content.

Zinio says the technology will also be available on other platforms to allow Mac and PC users to utilize the ease-of-use and convenience that’s offered as part of the iPad app. Additionally, the company is offering a preview of the app to allow music enthusiasts to check the app out.

We won’t spoil the list for you, but suffice it to say that the Beatles, Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan are all well represented over the 500 songs (while much to my colleague Arlen Schweiger’s chagrin, the Grateful Dead somehow wound up with a big goose egg).
