There are a lot of people out there who can’t seem to put down the smartphone, tablet or PC while watching TV—even when it’s good TV. In fact, several companies are encouraging this behavior, launching various second-screen apps with additional information, photos and even some exclusive content.
A company named zeebox is offering a second-screen experience that’s slightly more personal. The company just launched zeebox TV Rooms, a “fan-driven” approach to second-screen viewing. The new app feature is almost like your own chat room, where fans can create virtual rooms to talk about shows, characters, themes and more.
According to zeebox, TV Rooms are typically fan-driven. However, the company isn’t opposed to having a few sponsored rooms as well. Bravo will be the first network to sponsor a zeebox TV Room, for its insanely popular Real Housewives franchise. The room is expected to go live in conjunction with “The Real Housewives of Orange County: 100th Episode Special,” which will air Monday, June 24 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT
“As the first network to partner with zeebox for a dedicated TV Room, we’re excited to celebrate the Real Housewives of Orange County‘s 100th episode in a larger way that extends beyond the TV screen,” said Lisa Hsia, EVP of digital for Bravo Media. “By creating a dialogue between fans and Housewives within zeebox during the special, we’re providing our dedicated fans with an added layer of engagement for commemorating this milestone with Bravo and each other—while upholding Bravo’s commitment to pioneering cross-platform experiences for fans.”
Otherwise, expect more than 4,000 TV Rooms at launch, across shows within the two-week viewing schedule. The app will also include 60 themed TV Rooms ranging from “Reality TV Time” to “Late Night Show Breakdown,” as well as a weekly Top 50 Rooms lineup, which will be ranked based on activity (likes, comments, shares) and members currently joining.
Right now, TV Rooms is exclusive to the zeebox iOS app, and is accessible within the menu tabs of the app. TV Rooms will be available to Android users in the coming weeks.
The company expects upgrades to follow, which will include new video experiences, images, viewable live show clips, and the ability to post external links. Since the launch, zeebox says it has exceeded 5 million global downloads.
