There are so many streaming services available today: Netflix, Hulu Plus and Amazon Prime are just a few of the options offering endless entertainment for a monthly fee. Now, YouTube is looking to throw its hat into the entertainment ring.

Of course, YouTube is no stranger to streaming media. In fact, we could spend hours looking at movie trailers alone. However, the company wants you to take them more seriously as an entertainment option, and has announced plans to offer 100 “channels” of online entertainment.

Since the service has backing from Google, you probably know that this won’t just be more options for viral videos. According to the beta site, YouTube is actually bringing in artists such as Madonna, Amy Poehler, Stan Lee, Deepak Chopra, Tony Hawk and Jay-Z to develop some of the content.

If rumors are correct, the company is said to be putting more than $100 million into what’s being called “professional-level shows.” Whether that means “good” is personal preference. However, there will be plenty of choose from across 19 genres, including music, pop culture, health, sports, and more.

“Our goal with this channels expansion, along with the grants and educational programs we’ve launched in the past year, is to bring an even broader range of entertainment to YouTube, giving you more reasons to keep coming back again and again,” said Robert Kyncl, YouTube’s global head of content partnerships

Expect the new channels to start rolling out next month and continue through next year. Sign up to get info on the new channels as they’re announced, or you can get a sneak peek on YouTube’s Original Channels beta site.
