Once the service shuts down, existing customers will only be able to play purchased music on existing authorized computers.
First MSN Music silenced its service. Now Yahoo! informed its customers that the Yahoo! Music Store will shut down by September 30.
“After the Store closes, Yahoo will no longer be able to support the retrieval of license keys for music purchased from Yahoo Music Unlimited, and Yahoo will no longer be able to authorize song playback on additional computers,” said the company in an email to customers. Ouch!
Ars Technica says that you should still be able to play any purchased music on existing authorized computers. If you upgrade your hardware or software, say goodbye to those purchases. The most sound solution? Burn baby burn.
This probably sounds familiar to MSN Music customers. They shuttered service on August 31. However, after pressure from subscribers, they are keeping DRM servers active through 2011. The Electronic Frontier Foundation is looking for similar recourse, asking Yahoo! to refund customers, issue an apology, provide proofs of purchase, and, assuming they do any of those things, make sure their customers know about it.
