If the Xbox 360 is your gaming console of choice and you’ve been thinking of upgrading your HDTV to some high-def DVD gaming and viewing, starting Aug. 1 would be a good time to do so.

The HD DVD Promotional Group has announced that the price of the Xbox 360 HD DVD drive will drop from $199 to $179 at that time, and purchasers can be off and running on their HD DVD collection. Microsoft is applying the same deal Toshiba previously made on its HD DVD players, whereby purchasers can choose five free titles from a selection of 15 via a mail-in offer.

The price reduction coincides with the group’s touting of the upcoming HD DVD releases of ‘Heroes: Season 1,’ ‘300’ and ‘Star Trek: The Original Series.’

Go away soon? Really doubt that it will go away. Right now the HD-DVD is overall getting better reviews from people.

Xbox isn’t selling like crazy with these but only because I must say Blu-Ray has been getting the better movies. However, once HD-DVD can get better movies then it’ll take off. I expect this Christmas to be quite good to us HD-DVD users and I expect to buy this come next month.

They found the sweet spot, 5 movies and 180 is a great deal. Nothing comes close to their price right now. Especially on a good system.

So what do you think? Is this a way for MS to get rid of surplus stock, or is this their way of trying to give the format a shot in the arm?

I find it odd that MS is still behind HD DVD when its Marketplace is doing so well. Based on nothing but a gut feeling, I expect this add-on to go away soon.
