Windows Home Server Corrupts Your Files
Microsoft issues warning to all Home Server users - do not edit files stored on backup systems.

Microsoft Corp. is urging its Home Server users to make an extra backup copy of any important program files before editing. “When you use certain programs to edit files on a home computer that uses Windows Home Server, the files may become corrupted when you save them to the home server,” a spokesman said in a recent support document.

These programs inlcude Vista Photo Gallery, Live Photo Gallery, Office OneNote 2007, Office OneNote 2003, Office Outlook 2007, Microsoft Money 2007, and SyncToy 2.0 Beta.

The document further warns that “there have been customer reports of issues with Torrent applications, with Intuit Quicken, and with QuickBooks program files. Our support team is currently trying to reproduce these issues in our labs.”

The problem appears to be with the method in which Windows Home Server handles shared folders with these certain programs.

No word on when a fix will be available, though it will be posted at Microsoft Support - Article ID 946676.
