There are certain consumer goods that have carved a niche as the go-to or must have in their category. For example, in the world music, the Gibson Les Paul is an iconic instrument that no other manufacturer has been able to replicate.
In the consumer audiophile world many people use the same accolades reserved for the Les Paul when they discuss Wilson Audio.
The Utah-based manufacturer of high-performance consumer loudspeakers’ latest product is the Sophia 3 freestanding loudspeaker, which it positions as a no-frills Wilson product. The company’s engineers have designed the Sophia 3 in a manner in which it can be successfully used with a wide variety of electronics without a loss of performance.
The three-way loudspeaker incorporates a single 10-inch aluminum cone woofer, a single 7-inch cellulose/paper pulp midrange driver and a single 1-inch titanium-dome tweeter.
Wilson says the 4-ohm speaker is 87dB sensitive and it has a rated frequency response of 20Hz to 22kHz.
Highlighting some of the redesigned elements of the Sophia 3 includes a new proprietary midrange driver, a redesigned midrange/tweeter baffle that’s set on a newly aligned slope and a ported enclosure that features the company’s X material, which is said to be more inert than other materials.
While some vaunted Wilson speakers run in the six figures, the Sophia 3 runs just under $17,000 per pair, so start filling up that piggy bank.
