Hot on the heels of the new Amazon Fire TV for 4K TVs, we’re now getting a 4K Roku.: The Roku 4 will feature access to more 4K content than any other media streamer, as well as the type of streaming and picture quality you’d want paired with your 4K TVs.
The 4K Roku has a quad-core processor, up to 60 fps 4K streaming, HDCP 2.2 support, 802.11ac MIMO WiFi, a headphone jack for private listening, and an optical audio out. It can also access a ton of 4K content from Netflix, M-Go, Amazon Instant Video, ToonGoogles, VUDU and YouTube. There’s even a curated 4K Spotlight channel and a 4K UHD category within the Roku Channel Store so you can find 4K content easily.
Of course, if you haven’t upgraded to a 4K TV just yet, the box will also work with your existing HDTV. Similar to previously released Roku boxes, the Roku 4 can tap into over 300,000 movies and TV episodes. It even has universal voice search, so it’s easy to navigate through all of that content.
Besides the ability to be paired with 4K TVs, the Roku 4 uses the new Roku OS 7, which provides the option to follow movies, TV shows, actors and directors via the Roku Feed. There’s also a new Hotel and Dorm Connect feature for when you take your Roku 4 on the road.
Another new perk is the Remote Finder feature, which will make it easy to find that controller whenever you need it. Just press the button on top of the Roku 4 and your remote will emit a tone so you can track it down.
Also worth mentioning is the newly redesigned Roku mobile app, which promises more control options. The company is also planning to add an on-the-go mode in the near future, so that users can access features like the Roku Feed while away from home.
“The Roku 4 is our best streaming player ever,” said Anthony Wood, Roku’s founder and CEO. “It provides an amazing 4K experience with powerful performance and brilliant picture, at up to 60 frames per second on 4K TVs, and access to the most streaming channels with 4K entertainment, plus innovative features like Remote Finder. Powered by the new Roku OS 7, the Roku 4 gives consumers a new era of streaming performance and control over their entertainment.”
The 4K Roku 4 is available for pre-order now, priced at $129.99. It’s expected to ship sometime in October. The company plans to roll out the Roku OS 7 to current-generation Roku players and Roku TVs through a software update starting in mid-October.
