If you haven’t figured out how to automate the laundry yet, Whirlpool has an interesting little announcement. The company says it’s now part of the “Works with Nest” program, a developer program that taps into Nest application programming interfaces (APIs) to create a true connected home experience.
In other words, automated laundry — fresh, automated laundry.
To launch the partnership, Whirlpool has created a “Works with Nest” washer (WFL98HEBU) and dryer (WEL98HEBU) that integrates with the Nest Learning Thermostat. Specifically, each of those laundry machines will keep tabs on the thermostat’s Home and Away modes. That way, the washer and dryer can keep your clothes smelling fresh, even if the laundry ends while you’re out. The dryer can even switch to a longer, energy-efficient cycle when it gets the message that you’re not at home. Also worth noting is that if you’re a participant of Nest’s Rush Hour Rewards program, you can use the Nest to delay the start of the washer and dryer during high-demand energy periods.
“The products Whirlpool designs adapt to consumers’ lives and sense what they need — the way they cook, clean and entertain,” said Brett Dibkey, vice president and general manager of Integrated Business Units for Whirlpool Corporation. “This collaboration is part of a corporate strategy to build relationships with companies like Nest that demonstrate our shared passion for creating consumer-inspired products. For more than 100 years, Whirlpool Corporation has designed for the way consumers live. It’s an exciting time as we look at the future of the home appliance industry and the number of possibilities on the horizon.”
Whirlpool’s “Works with Nest” washer and dryer are both available now at Home Depot, priced at $1,599 each. Once you purchase the pair, each one can be connected to the Nest through the Whirlpool Smart Appliance App for iOS and Android devices.
