Wal-Mart Offers HD DVD Refunds
The retailer is offering a buyout of players purchased at their stores after November 1.
April 09, 2008 | by Rachel Cericola

Wal-Mart doesn’t just roll back prices—they are rolling back the clock, so you can think twice about that HD DVD purchase.

The mega-retailer is joining in the HD DVD return frenzy, offering customers money back for any HD DVD purchase made after November 1.

In case you don’t remember, Wal-Mart was pretty instrumental in pushing the defunct format, offering Toshiba’s HD-A2 HD DVD player for $99. That magical day was November 2—so those players qualify for the refund as well.

The Wall Street Journal says that you won’t need any of the player’s original packaging, but need to get the player and your receipt to any store by April 30, 2008.

Best Buy and Circuit City are currently running similar refund programs, offering gift cards and store credit towards other HD purchases.

Ditto Jeff.  I got a decent deal on the A3 from Amazon and they are offering a $50 credit now to eligible buyers.  Plus Netflix still is renting out all the existing HD-DVD titles, so I’m keeping mine.

I also bought my HD player at wal-mart for 98.97.
I agree with jeff and dave 100%.

I finally got my 5 free hd movies.  They would have cost more than the player.

I love my HD player, thanks wal-mart & Toshiba.

PS. I will buy a BR when they are under 200.00.

I agree with Jeff… why would I get rid of my HD player (I paid 74.99 for it by the way) that was introduced at a price of 500.00?

Matter of fact, my local Wal-Mart has 2 left and I’ll probably buy another one!

It does a great job with HD DVDs, which will likely be available for purchase for quite a while, and SD DVDs look great upconverted through it.

I’m not waiting for the sub-200.00 BD player though, I’m just going to buy a PS3 for BD duty and the few good games that are available for it.

Considering that they make such good standard DVD players, why return an HD DVD player?

While it’s cool of WM (I guess) to offer this, for most the return credit on their player is far from enough to buy into Blu.

Keep your HD DVD player, enjoy the existing HD discs you own as well as every DVD you buy/rent/borrow—-all looking excellent on your TV.

I did’nt buy my A2 @ WM, so I’m out of luck (but then again, I want to keep mine). Did get mine for $99 @ BestBuy, so now it only cost me $50 after the GC arrived. $50 for a solid upconverted that also plays the HD titles I own - 7 of which came w/ the A2. Yeah…..i’ll keep it.

When BluRay falls to the sub-$200 point, I’m in on that as well.
