Vudu, ReQuest Servers Sweeten Master Suite
Easy-to-control housewide audio and video content help provide happy bedtime nightly in this home.
August 27, 2009 by Arlen Schweiger

We can’t quite share this homeowner’s borderline R-rated reaction when custom electronics pro DistinctAV fired up the basement equipment rack for the first time. But let’s just say that a bunch of the equipment is routed to the master suite, and company president Derek Cowburn adds that for the homeowner it’s “an electronics dream come true.”

Like the rest of this fully-loaded house, Cowburn notes, all the video, audio, and lighting in the master suite is controlled by the RTI T3V Wi-Fi remotes. Each remote can control the entire home and provides full 2-way feedback via the Wi-Fi network capabilities.

“When it’s time for bed, the owners can simply press the ‘All off except master suite’ button followed by the Security page ‘Arm Security’ button,” he explains. “The lights, TVs, and house audio all turn off remotely so there’s no need to get out of bed.”

Of course, when you settle in for the night with a 32-inch LG TV and Yamaha surround soundbar, with access to the basement-stored three HD Satellite boxes, a DVD player, the ReQuest IMC music server, an automation PC, any of the security cameras, and the Vudu Movie Server, well ... you get the point. There’s not much need to be in the rest of the house.

The homeowner can even check out webcasts of sports—particularly college basketball—on the bedroom TV thanks to the Smart Home Automation PC (and it’s available on any TV).

Keeping an eye, and ear, on the baby is easy through the cameras that are visible from either TV in the master suite, says Cowburn. “The remotes make it easy to see what’s going on by putting the lighting control buttons on the same page as the camera select buttons. Pull up the outdoor camera and control the outdoor lights from the same page.”

More comforts and conveniences reside in the master bath. There’s a 19-inch LG LCD HDTV that’s on a cantilever mount in a pocket so it tucks into the wall for in-room viewing and easily swings out so it’s viewable from the shower.

The ReQuest IQ touchscreen audio controller gives they access to all their music collection and the Finetunes streaming music service. A 3 TB rack-mounted ReadyNAS conveniently stores all their music, family photos, and movies for instant recall from the ReQuest house audio system, Automation PC, or any of their desktop or laptop PCs and Macs.

“How romantic: Lock the house, check on the kids, dim the lights, start some romantic background music, snuggle up in bed and put the basketball game on—wow, watch the evening heat up,” says Cowburn jokingly. Then again, did we mention DistinctAV is in the heart of Indiana Hoosier basketball country??
