Just hours after the Toshiba announcement, Universal Studios had an announcement of its own. In a move that shocks no one, the studio has come out and said they will start producing Blu-ray movies. Good move guys!
“Universal will continue its aggressive efforts to broaden awareness for hi-def’s unparalleled offerings in interactivity and connectivity, at an increasingly affordable price,” said Craig Kornblau, president, Universal Studios Home Entertainment and Universal Pictures Digital Platforms (via Reuters). “The emergence of a single, high-definition format is cause for consumers, as well as the entire entertainment industry, to celebrate.”
Celebrate? While many have been cheering the end of the format war, I’m guessing that the ones that plunked down money on an HD DVD player haven’t busted out the party hats yet—just sayin’.
Paramount and DreamWorks are keeping mum about the switch. Stay tuned.
