“Transformers” is about to smash more than cars, buildings and people. Variety says that the film is on track to become the fastest-selling DVD of the year and biggest HD DVD of all time.

It may not have gotten the best reviews, but it does have super-cool special effects and big explosions—perfect for testing out your HD DVD player.

The summer action hit sold more than 8.3 million discs in the first week, with almost 200,000 of those in the HD DVD format. About half of those were sold in the first day alone.

Kind of funny since director Michael Bay first blasted Paramount for the side they chose in the high-def format war. He has since retracted his original statements.

He might not want to get too excited; “Spider-Man 3” is hitting Blu-ray next week.

I did see that too Steve. He likes it; he doesn’t like it… looks like he’s still on for the sequel anyway.

USA Today interviewed Michael Bay and he apparently wasn’t so thrilled with the DVD. Nor with the HD-DVD exclusivity clause.
