Toshiba Cell TVs Offer Real-time 3D Conversion

Toshiba says its focus here at CES 2010 in Las Vegas will be its new ZX900 Cell TVs, which come in the Genesis series and Illusion series.

The two-piece system (it comes with a settop box) claims to offer real-time 2D to 3D conversion via its TriVector technology.

Toshiba, which has also introduced a 3D Blu-ray player here in Vegas, says its CELL Engine (first seen in the Sony PS3) has processing power 143 times that of existing TVs and 480Hz frame rates.

Cell TVs also have “Super Resolution” technology to upconvert SD content to 1080p, and “Net Super Resolution+” for compression noise canceling. The TVs use KIRA2 LED-backlit displays with 512 zones of localized dimming to be “twice as bright” with 1,000 cd/m2 brightness, according to Toshiba.

If all that isn’t enough, the ZX900 Series comes with a built-in 1TB hard drive to store media from the Net TV applications (Netflix, Vudu, CinemaNow and Pandora), a Blu-ray Player, 802.11n WiFi, DLNA compliance, and a video phone over IP (not Skype) feature.

Toshiba plans on shipping TVs “later this year.”
