Martin Scorsese definitely has his favorites. He practically made Robert De Niro’s career in the 1970s, and teamed with him for two of his most acclaimed movies, Raging Bull and Goodfellas. Leonardo DiCaprio was already a star by the time Scorsese got his mitts on him, but he’s obviously turned into a Scorsese favorite.
The latest collaboration from the two of them is the thriller Shutter Island, which arrives on Blu-ray high-def disc this week. The creepy hospital drama with a twist may not have been as well received, or award worthy as previous films from Scor-Caprio, like The Aviator, The Departed and Gangs of New York, but it’s certainly worth checking out in HD.
From Blu-ray.com’s video reviewer: “Shutter Island reveals yet another astonishing Blu-ray from Paramount. This 2.35:1 transfer displays the film’s dark noir-style imagery to near perfection, capturing the visual spirit of a bygone era but with the impeccable detailing, depth, and clarity afforded to productions of a more recent vintage. Shutter Island works via a unique visual style whereby it’s dark and foreboding here, brighter and livelier there, but never does the transfer fail to handle the varied visual schemes with equal parts detail and color reproduction.”
Sounds like the ingredients for a good movie and popcorn night in your own dedicated home theater.
If you’d rather go for laughs, the classic comedy Caddyshack also makes its way onto Blu-ray this week. Bill Murray, Rodney Dangerfield, Chevy Chase, Ted Knight—how many comedy legends can you squeeze into a movie? About golf, no less? We don’t know if it’s any funnier in high-def, but those country club golf outfits will be all the more colorful.
