After a few lackluster summer months of Blu-ray releases, we’re happy that fall—or at least September, since the official arrival of autumn isn’t here yet—has brought with it a slew of cool titles this week.
What current thirtysomthing wasn’t frightened and freaked out watching Poltergeist when they were kids? I’ll raise my hand to that. And now would be a pretty good time to rewatch the horror flick, as it’s ba-aack, this time in Blu-ray format this week. The movie is presented in its native CinemaScope aspect ratio, with a Dolby TrueHD 5.1 soundtrack that’s sure to capture all of the paranormal activity swirling around in your speakers. And yeah, the shaving in the mirror scene still grosses me out.
Speaking of horror, it doesn’t get much grislier than the family murders made famous by Truman Capote in the book In Cold Blood. The black-and-white 1967 film of the same name makes its way onto Blu-ray this week, and should be a good pickup or rental for true crime fans who may have missed this one.
One more little murder mayhem of note this week, with a typical Robert Altman spin. His cameo-filled The Player may have been overshadowed by other major hits of the early 90s, but it’s a masterful look at insider Hollywood, combining tongue-and-cheek with murder mystery.
No, it’s not all about blood and ghosts this week. There’s family fun in there as well—OK, maybe some more ghosts. The Peanuts collection arrives on Blu-ray, featuring longstanding goodies such as It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown and A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving, sure to look as crisp as ever in HD. Your older child, perhaps a tweeny bopper, can jam this week to Camp Rock 2.
On the sci-fi front, Tim Burton and George Lucas make some Blu-ray noise, with the releases of Mars Attacks! and THX 1138, respectively. Guess Lucas wanted to get that one out of the way before turning Blu-ray attention to Star Wars.
