Top 10 Blu-ray Releases for September 21
Another Robin Hood, an Oscar-winner and a couple of classics highlight this week's arrivals.
September 21, 2010 by Arlen Schweiger

I’m not sure why they keep making Robin Hood remakes. Sorry, but I’m looking at you, Kevin Costner and Russell Crowe. Hollywood got it right 70 years ago with Errol Flynn and The Adventures of Robin Hood, which, by the way, is available on Blu-ray.

Granted, I can’t really say much about the latest release, simply called Robin Hood, that comes out this week starring Mr. Crowe. And I do generally like him and the films he stars in. But throw in Mel Brooks’ Men in Tights version of Robin Hood and that’s essentially three remakes in the last 20 years. I’ll watch this latest one more out of intrigue than anything, but afterward it might give me good reason to put the original into my Netflix queue and enjoy a piece of Hollywood history.

Speaking of Hollywood history, what I do recommend home theater fans check out this week are two older releases, and an Oscar-winner from recent history—The Third Man, Charade and American Beauty.

Carol Reed’s The Third Man is always right up there in those best of all-time lists, and is an edge-of-your-seat type of suspense film. Charade features Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant in the lead roles—need I say more? Movie stars don’t get much bigger, and here they are in 1960s beautiful color from the Criterion collection, reportedly in a high-def transfer that is a major improvement from the standard DVD release. American Beauty may make some longtime married couples cringe at watching stereotypical suburbia play out, but it’s brilliantly written and well acted, especially by the leads of Kevin Spacey and Annette Bening.

Not up for a movie? How about TV? There’s an assortment of interesting television out this week, led by ABC’s Modern Family, which brings ol’ Al Bundy Ed O’Neill back where he belongs, in charge of a dysfunctional sitcom family. Welcome back, Ed.
