We already had our fun spoiled with the news that Alice in Wonderland would not be coming to Blu-ray in 3D just yet, but as a visual feast it may still be pretty interesting to check out in the high-def format that hits stores today.

The latest weird Tim Burton/Johnny Depp collaboration features Burton’s typically stunning video effects and color palette, which may have been the best part of his take on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. For those of you who have a more traditional 16:9 screen setup and are looking for a movie to fill it without the black bars on top and bottom, Burton filmed Alice in such aspect ratio to fill your screen. The soundtrack is in DTS-HD Master Audio 6.1, giving you an extra channel of surround effects.
Another re-telling of a classic novel comes this week with Steven Spielberg’s War of the Worlds. It’s a bit more action-packed to rock your theater, and also is presented in standard 16:9 aspect ratio. Spielberg may be fizzling a little of late, but the special effects in this one prove he still knows how to deliver a blockbuster, even if it’s Tom Cruise and not Harrison Ford in a starring role.
For Clint Eastwood fans, this week’s other big releases are all about the famed actor/director, who turned 80 on May 31. Roles like Space Cowboys, Heartbreak Ridge and Absolute Power make their way onto Blu-ray, plus big collections for his acting performances and separate box set for some of his directorial masterpieces, such as Unforgiven and Million Dollar Baby, are offered. So what’s it gonna be, punk?
