April 27, 2010 by Arlen Schweiger

If it’s action you want, then it’s action you’ll get in high-definition this week. After a couple of ho-hum weeks this month, April is ending with a bang—and we’re not even counting Avatar, released last Thursday, in our Top 10 Blu-ray releases of the week (click here to view slideshow).

There’s plenty else to get the testosterone flowing and the home theaters cranking. For big-time explosions, Bruce Willis and Armageddon make their way onto Blu-ray. The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack from our favorite action director Michael Bay should be enough to make any theater rattle.

If you want a more low-key suspense movie starring Mr. Willis, check out the game of wits as he matches against Richard Gere in The Jackal.

For more shoot ‘em up action, head back to the wild West for Tombstone. The early 90s gunslinger flick will keep you on the edge of your seat and give your surround-sound system a good workout.

With the likes of Elizabeth, Out of Africa and Tombstone, there’s a good dose of period-piece drama to be found on Blu-ray this week. There’s also some entertaining and epic futuristic drama with the cult favorite Dune presented in high-def. It may not be as bizarre as some of David Lynch’s other movies, but it certainly tries hard.

Here’s the full release schedule for this week (schedule and slideshow synopses courtesy of Blu-ray.com):
