Toothpaste, Toilet Paper and Texting
It’s all part of the morning routine for Gen Y smartphone users
January 23, 2013 by Lisa Montgomery

When people ask me what would be the first thing I’d grab in a house fire, my kids come first … second, I’m embarrassed to say, is my iPhone.

According to a 2012 Connected World Technology Report by Cisco, I’m in good company, though. Nine out of 10 Gen Y respondents said their smartphone is as much apart of their morning routines as brushing their teeth. In fact, many said they check their phones before they even get out of bed, which leads to the next, slightly bothersome factoid: Globally, three out of four respondents use their smartphones in bed—likely putting a squelch on romance. Based on the study, excessive smartphone impacts nearly every facet of a Gen Yer’s life.

Here are a few other findings from the study:

• More than a third use smartphones in the bathroom.
• Two-thirds of respondents said they spend an equal amount or more time socializing online with friends than they do in person.
• More than 40 percent said they would feel anxious, like part of me is missing, if they couldn’t check their smartphones constantly.
• Globally, one if five checks a smartphone for email, text and social media updates at least every 10 minutes. In the U.S., two out of five check at least once every 10 minutes.
• Women are more driven to connect: 85 percent of women vs. 63 percent of men find themselves often compulsively checking their smartphone.
• 81 percent believe that people have different online and offline identities.
• Almost 90 percent upload photos to share or store on Internet sites.
• 87 percent have a Facebook account, and one in 10 have Facebook always up.
