Call it the Pulp Fiction Effect. Quentin Tarantino’s masterpiece of the mid-90s paved the way for countless attempts at other movies that try to weave together seemingly random plotlines and characters into collisions, usually involving lots of chattiness and drugs. The parade of post-Pulp Fiction movies got a little mind-numbing, but a few were pretty good.
One of them was 1999’s Go, which is as fast-paced as its title suggests and features the underrated (under-utilized on other films may be more appropriate) Sarah Polley headlining an ensemble cast that also features Scott Wolf, Jay Mohr and Timothy Olyphant. As the dog days of summer wind down, Go might be the headliner of this week’s Blu-ray releases to rev up your engines. You get a Dolby TrueHD 5.1 soundtrack and widescreen 2.40:1 aspect ratio, to boot, for your ‘scope theater enjoyment.
A few others in this week’s crop of Blu-rays are sure to please particular genres: you’ve got Hannah Montana: The Movie for the prepubescent crowd; Akira Kurosawa’s Kagemusha, delivered by the Criterion Collection, for the movie sophisticate; The Last Starfighter for the sci-fi buff; and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days if you’re looking for a date movie night and maybe some eye candy of Kate Hudson or Matthew McConaughey.
If TV’s more your thing, you can get up to speed on the critically acclaimed serial killer drama Dexter with seasons 1 through 3 in a bundle, or just the complete third season.
