The Wii’s motion-sensing controller was designed to attact gamers and non-gamers alike.
The Wii is still scarce, but people are buying them—somehow, somewhere.
According to the NPD Group, Nintendo sold more than 666,000 Wii consoles just in June. In the same month, Sony sold 405,500 PS3s, while the Xbox 360 trailed with 219,800 units. Overall, Nintendo has sold 10.9 Wiis since its November 2006 launch. That’s more than the Xbox 360, says Bloomberg.
The Wii’s success has been attributed to its motion-sensing controller, which is attracting many non-gamers.
“Wii was created with the goal of expanding the gaming universe through its intuitive motion-sensing controller,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo’s executive VP of sales & marketing.
Six of the 10 top-selling games for June were titles made for Nintendo. This includes the Wii Fit, which uses a “balance board” peripheral to simulate various exercises.
Earlier this week, Nintendo announced the Wii MotionPlus add-on, which will add increased motion-sensitivity to the Wii Remote controller. The company also announced new games, including the “Rock Band”/“Guitar Hero” competitor, “Wii Music.”
