Shinoda Plasma’s Shipla Wall
We keep hearing about OLED and its super slimness as the next generation of TV displays. Japanese manufacturer Shinoda Plasma Co. will be demonstrating its ultra thin design next week at InfoComm, and it works off of plasma technology.
The company is exhibiting its “Shipla Wall,” a 125-inch curved PTA display for the first time in the United States. The PTA is for plasma tube arrays, and the whole shebang might remind some of Stewart Filmscreen’s CineCurve projection screen.
Despite being a 125-inch mammoth display, Shinoda’s screen gets its thinness from the 1 mm diameter of the plasma tubes, which are lined up and affixed with electron film on both sides.
The technology allows for eye-popping color and vivid imagery that plasma can provide, in super-large displays and weights of about 1/10th that of LCD and plasma displays.

It’s neat at first glance, but if you look closely at the pic in the TechOn article, you can see that it it actually 3 displays linked together. As such there are two vertical seams that I’m sure will be quite annoying to the average consumer. It is also only 960 x 360 resolution. I don’t think too many people are going to want that in their living room!
Why is it curved? It may be thin but the curved shape means it takes up a lot more room space out from the wall.
OLEDs are still way better - especially as the power consumption is lower. Enough with the energy waste of these large Plasma/LCD TVs!
