If you’re in the mood to listen to the music in your multiroom audio system rather than what’s on your Apple iPhone or iPod touch, don’t drop the device just yet. Now you can use it as a wireless remote.

The touchscreens of the iPhone and iPod touch can control the MODE multiroom A/V system from SpeakerCraft, which operates through the home’s wireless data network.

The setup lets users have more than one iPhone or iPod working in multiple audio zones, according to SpeakerCraft president Jeremy Burkhardt.

The interface has the look and feel of other iPhone functions, and features large virtual buttons within its colorful graphics. Users can control the MODE system through the iPhone or iPod touch, or from any PC on the network.

“I hate to say it, but this is the beginning of the end for keypads,” Burkhardt says. “Soon any keypad that isn’t emulated on a device like the iPhone will be obsolete.”
