Home theater interest is surging once again and much of this is being fueled by a new generation of products that offer a combination of value and performance. Fitting perfectly under the moniker of “value and performance” is the latest projector from Sony.

The company’s newly announced VPL-HW40ES home theater projector is a competitively priced solution capable of reproducing vivid images in 2D or 3D for programming as diverse as movies and network dramas to sporting events and reality shows. Yamato Tanikawa, director of home entertainment at Sony Electronics, points out the projector is perfect for homeowners that think bigger is better.

“The VPL-HW40ES home theater projector is ideal for those that want a larger screen than a flat-panel TV can provide, but at a reasonable cost,” he states. “Also, this projector takes up little space and can be used with a retractable screen that is out of sight when not in use. [It] is perfect for those that do not want a large TV to be the focal point of their home decor.”

The HPL-HW40ES features a newly designed optical engine and the ability to produce as much as 1,700 lumens. The projector also incorporates Sony’s proprietary SXRD LCoS chipset and its Bright Cinema and Bright TV image enhancement technologies.

Other features include the company’s Contrast Enhancer that analyzes scenes in real time and optimizes dynamic range in each area of the image to produce deep blacks and bright whites, as well as Sony’s MotionFlow technology which inserts additional images in between each original video frame to produce smoother and sharper motion with less blur. In addition, the HPL-HW40ES includes a built-in IR 3D transmitter that automatically detects 3D content and a cooling system that operates with just 21dB of noise to ensure that low-level dialog is not obscured by fan hum.

Shipping to dealers sometime this month, Sony says that the HPL-HW40ES will be available in black for under $2,500.
