Sony Puts Google Services into BRAVIA Smart Stick
The NSZ-GU1 delivers web search and Google Play to almost any 2013 Sony TV.

Looking to smarten up that smart TV? Sony is looking to enhance your overall TV experience with the likes of Google, via its newly announced BRAVIA Smart Stick.

The BRAVIA Smart Stick, which also goes by the name NSZ-GU1, can put Google Search and all of the goodness that comes with Google Play right on that big (or small) screen. The add-on has 8GB of on-board storage and comes with a voice-activated remote for super-easy searching.

If you’re wondering why you’d pop for this versus Google’s $35 Chromecast, know that Sony is putting additional features into this pint-sized package. Besides a full version of the Chrome browser, users can expect a Flash Media Player, as well as out-of-the-box access to Netflix, Pandora, Amazon Instant Video and YouTube. (Of course, subscriptions and/or fees may apply.) Designed to work with your existing cable or satellite service, the BRAVIA Smart Stick also has a picture-in-picture feature for watching TV and surfing the web simultaneously.

Of course, some of you may not have a choice between Sony and the Google-branded dongle. The BRAVIA Smart Stick only works with Sony TVs—ones produced in 2013 or beyond. Also, that new TV needs an MHL port on the back. It plugs into that and powers up using a USB cable.

Sony is selling the BRAVIA Smart Stick now, with an MSRP of $149.99.
