Sony Pulls Down PS3 Update

Here we were… touting the fun and function of Sony’s 2.40 firmware update for the PS3, only to have the rug ripped out from under us.

Sony has announced that the download is gone—for now. Apparently, “a limited number of calls” have come in from customers complaining that the update was wreaking havoc on their gaming systems. Apparently those “few” systems were freezing up. There are plenty of people talking about it on the PlayStation Forums.

“We are committed to providing the PS3 community with XMB access features delivered in the v2.40 update,” the statement said. “We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up.”

The 2.40 update was designed to add a trophy system, a Google Search Bar, and the highly touted XMB (XrossMediaBar) feature.

Thanks Brian!

Remember the old saw"If it aint broke, don’t fix it”.

2.41 is up now, I’m told. (At work so can’t check it).

Soundzilla, 2.40 wasn’t up long at all. I got it because it popped up late one night as I finished watching a movie. By mid-day I believe it had been pulled down. So I don’t think it was up for more than 12 hours, most of those when the US was sleeping.

That said, I’ve had no problems with it…

Hey soundzilla: Not sure of the exact times, but everything went up and down on July 2. As far as I know, they have not reposted the update yet. Many people downloaded the 2.40 version with no problems, though. Hope you were one of them!

This doesn’t say when Sony posted the update and when they pulled it. Unless I missed it, that would be useful information to know. I know I updated my PS3 recently but I don’t remember the version number. I guess I’ll have to run downstairs and check the version I have.

Welcome to the world of technology...or actually, this is life! 1000 years ago the equivalent would have been a baker realizing his bread was half baked when he or she put it up for sale… then “end users” got it and complained and it was pulled from the shelves - only difference is that the baker would no have the load of PR/Marketing rubbish that we get now days. On the bright side - we better all be grateful that this sort of things does not happen more often.
