Sony’s PlayStation 3, soon with video downloads
June 26, 2008 by Arlen Schweiger

Fans of Sony’s PlayStation 3 get to beat their chests again about how the gaming console does everything but cook breakfast. Sony has released a statement today outlining “Group Corporate Strategy” for FY2008 to FY2010 (click there for a PDF), and one of the strategies coming right up is movie downloads for the PS3.

We already know how sweet the PS3 is as a Blu-ray player—and, oh yeah, it also plays games—but if you don’t have much Blu-ray content, you’ll now have access to plenty of other video choices.

Sony says the service will be coming in summer 2008, which if the seasonal calendar hasn’t changed means we’re already a few days in, so go ahead and shift to the edge of your seats for this arrival.

The PS3 download capability is one of several items of note in the report, which also includes initiatives to have 90 percent of electronics categories networked by 2011; other video service rollout across “key” Sony products by FY2010 to go with the PS3; and of course what would a corporate strategy be these days without some green thinking, which Sony calls Green Management 2010 and focuses on reducing greenhouse gases.

We’ve received comment after comment about the PS3 for Blu-ray—when the video downloads roll out, we’ll be interested in hearing how those look and sound too.
