3D Blu-ray

Sony introduced its first 3D-capable Blu-ray player, the BDP-S770, which features WiFi connectivity and instant streaming of online content.

iPhone or iPod touch users will be able to control the device, which is due out this summer, using a free app from the Apple App Store.

No pricing was announced, but Sony hopes to ship the BDP-S770 in the summer of 2010.

Until then, Sony is promising that all existing Playstation 3 consoles can be upgraded to 3D via a firmware download.

Sony didn’t make clear whether the 3D Blu-ray experience on upgraded PS3s will be any different from 3D on its forthcoming dedicated Blu-ray players, but details will follow.

Other features of the BDP-S770:

• Compatible with DVDs, CDs, and SACDs
• Ethernet jack
• Built-in Wi-Fi wireless (802.11) with Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) for access to Sony’s BRAVIA Internet Video platform and BD-LIVE functionality
• IP Content Noise Reduction technology and Precision Cinema HD Upscaling
• Compatible with Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) devices

The Sony BRAVIA Internet Video Platform allows streaming from 25-plus providers, including Netflix, Amazon, YouTube, Pandora, NPR and, of course, Sony Pictures and Sony Music.

Entertainment Database Browser, using Gracenote technologies, lets Blu-ray player users search for content using production information, like choosing an actor.
