When AirPlay was first announced, many started eulogizing Sonos. However, instead of trying to beat them, Sonos has announced plans to join them —or at least add AirPlay support into the existing Sonos product line.

The free software update will allow customers to stream songs from an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to any Sonos ZonePlayer, via Apple’s AirPort Express. Sonos says that the System Software 3.4 upgrade is now available.

“The cool AirPlay feature for music is sending a song from an iOS device to a speaker or receiver,” said John MacFarlane, founder and CEO, Sonos, Inc. “Today Sonos improves the AirPlay experience with party mode so a music lover can send a song from his iPhone or iPad to all the rooms in a home with perfect synchronization.”

Other notable Sonos features allow users to play different iTunes-based songs in different rooms, or you can opt for Party Mode, which can send one song to multiple ZonePlayers throughout the home.

Sonos says that the new 3.4 software will also update the company’s free iPad and iPhone apps, as well as Sonos Controller for Android.
