Some products allow for remote control over devices in the home. Other products let you know how much energy any given gadget is consuming. Now, the Smart Power Strip is looking to combine both of those features into one product.
The Smart Power Strip is a simple-to-use device that plugs into any outlet. From there, you can control whatever devices are plugged into the strip, via iOS and Android smartphones. The difference between this option and some of the existing ones on the market is that the Smart Power Strip can turn that one outlet into four controllable outlets and two always-on USB ports.
The control happens via dual 2.4Ghz home automation (MESH) technology. That same secret sauce allows the devices to interact with each other. In other words, a motion detector can trigger lights or the heat can kick on based on a temperature sensor.
While some of the integration details will come later, the Smart Power Strip is expected to provide a few things out of the box. The first is that remote access, which can also send push notifications when devices are turned on or off. Also, the strip has a built-in power meter. This allows you to check in on power consumption, calculate bills and even schedule use.
The Smart Power Strip is currently seeking funding on Kickstarter. At last peek, the project was almost halfway towards its $100,000 goal, with 25 days left to go in the campaign. To secure your Smart Power Strip, you must make a minimum pledge of $99. If all goes well, the Smart Power Strip will start shipping in April 2014.
