A Skype App for iPhone/iPod touch will be available today

It was only a matter of time before Skype came to Apple’s iPhone. The web communication service was a no-brainer to get an app available for the Apple portable devices (yes, iPod touch too), as it was the top request the company heard, and Skype has now delivered.

Sounds like you’ll get a lot of similar features Skype will be offering in the way of mobile when it arrives on the Nokia N97 later this year, and if you’ve got an iPhone or touch you can get them right away.

Using a 3G, Wi-Fi, EDGE or GPRS network, you’ll be able to log in to Skype and work within your contact list (or update it) to make free Skype-to-Skype calls—including international ones, or nominally charged calls to non-Skype landlines—as well as send and receive messages, and know when other Skype users are online.

CNET notes that Skype is missing a few functions for iPhone, like setting up a conference call (you can field an incoming conference call) or being able to field a second incoming call, but that you do get iPhone-only goods like being able to take a photo with the phone and add it as your avatar, or pull an image from the camera pics to use.

While you’re on a call, you can tap on buttons like mute, speaker, and hold—so if you’ve got a lot of Skype contacts, you can start using your iPod Touch almost as much as a regular cellphone. You’ll have to heed to the wireless network though, so if it’s not a strong signal you may want to wait before making any important calls.
