Media servers are commonly sold as standalone products. You plug them into your entertainment system, and your entire movie and music library becomes accessible through one machine. Sim2 plans to make it possible to buy both your video projector and your media server together as a package. The company has teamed up with Entertainment Experience to offer an all-in-one media system that includes either a Sim2 Grand Cinema C3X 1080 or HT5000E three-chip DLP projector along with a media server that manages Blu-ray and DVD movies, PlayStation and Xbox games, high-definition programming and movies from online provider HDGiants.
Sim2 and Entertainment Experience are marketing the package to “a very small population of consumers” who want their at-home viewing experience to be as similar to a movie theater experience as possible, says Larry Cate, Entertainment Experience vice president of sales and marketing. As Cate explains, the media server and projectors will feature Entertainment Experience’s exclusive video processing technology to produce color and contrast levels that meet DCI (Digital Cinema Initiative) standards adopted by Hollywood studios.
Is it an improvement over Blu-ray? “It’s very subjective to the viewer,” says Cate. “Overall, the advanced color and contrast processing produce a very organic texture that we see in professional cinemas.”
To complete the experience, Sim2 and Entertainment Experience will bundle digital movies from HDGiants with their systems, and provide Internet access to additional standard-definition or high-definition movie packages from HDGiants.
Pricing and availability of the home theater package has yet to be determined.
